Introduction:

one of the main requirements of companies increasing expansion of consumer product markets including food products has made packaging and design these products. Packaging food products, from preserving freshness to increasing the attractiveness of sales shelves, plays an essential role in the success of economic markets. Tomato paste is one of the most widely used seasonings in all types of food and on the other hand, is constantly subject to mold and spoilage; as a result, the packaging of tomato paste is of particular importance.

Different packaging:

When talking about maintaining the quality and safety of food, glass packaging and metal cans come to mind; because of glass and metal packages ensure the shelf life of products by maintaining quality and minimizing food waste. On the one hand, can packaging is very effective in terms of durability and maintaining quality. Having these 2 types of packaging at the same time can be a great advantage.

Glass jar packaging:

Packaging glass containers are a type of container that can be used for packaging food, cosmetic products, and food products, as well as storing these products. Glass containers are the best packaging containers on the market. Glass packaging is valuable for its transparency and versatility in the display of products. Transparent containers allow consumers to see the contents and assure them of the quality and freshness of the product. In some European countries up to 90% of the glass is recycled, so the best containers are the ones that improve the environment and maintain it. In its recommendations, the World Health Organization publishes the results of numerous academic experiments and considers the following titles to be a privilege of glassware.

  • The healthiest & healthiest dishes possible.
  • They do not react chemically to any other food or product.
  • Do not change the properties of products such as color, smell, taste, and iodine, and ultimately protect them.
  • They do not harm the environment because they are biodegradable and recyclable.
  • They are impenetrable.
  • Reusable & washable.

• They do not damage products at high temperatures and humidity.

Metal Packing:

One of the most widely used materials in packaging, unlike plastic, is completely recyclable and does not harm nature. The metals used in the packaging are iron, aluminum, and tin. Packaging industry experts still approve and even recommend metal packaging because it is highly resistant and does not damage the product during transportation and storage. Metal cans are recycled by 54.9% according to statistics from the Environmental Protection Agency in 2015. In addition, aluminum beverage containers contain the highest percentage of recycled content among a variety of beverage containers with 68% of recycled materials. Metal packaging perfectly protects the product from the penetration of light, heat, or moisture and does not allow it to be damaged. The use of metals in food packaging has gained a lot of popularity. Therefore, metal packaging is seen in various products such as fruits, canned food, soups, and vegetables. Using such packaging helps the effects last longer and creates healthier food choices. Food meets our daily needs and if it’s not stored correctly or when it’s inside the packaging, it’s going to rot through the air pores, so packaging should be provided for them to create a completely closed space for these foods and keep them away from reacting with any other material.

These food requirements coincide with the application of metal packaging. Metal cans are empty of pores during construction, preventing moisture or light from entering them but they may react with food, which causes food to become toxic. To avoid the reaction of the packaging and the product a polishing layer is used inside the packaging, which separates the metal and the outcome from each other.

Tomato Paste packaging process:

Food packaging is essential tomato paste doubles importance as it is a highly consumed product. The tomato paste packaging line generally includes unloading, diluting, salting, and pasteurizing the paste, filling the cap, pasteurizing after capping, labeling, and boxing. Below is a brief description of the tomato paste packaging process:

Rubber discharge and dilution:

At the first stage of the packaging process, barrels containing tomato paste are discharged into concentrated tanks using a return barrel machine. At this point, the paste is uniformed to prepare for dilution. Tomato paste is inserted into the cooking and condensing machine after is uniform and water is added to it until the concentration reaches 25 BRIX. At this point, the concentration of tomato Paste decreases from Brix 36 to Brix 25.

Salt and paste:

In the salting and paste stage, initially diluted paste with a concentration of 25 is introduced into the salting tanks and 1.5% salt is added. After that, to increase the temperature & pasteurize the tomato paste is transferred to the pasteurization machine and pasteurized under high heat by sharing from pipes surrounded by water vapor.

Filling and capping:

Pasteurized paste is prepared for filling inside metal or glass packaging at a temperature of 85°c the filling machine with its filling Pistons, drains tomato paste inside the designed packaging. Cans stuffed with tomato paste are transferred to the capping machine with a transfer tape. The sensor for the capping device detects the entry of cans, is placed in a can on the capping rail is guided by a Mardon on the pedal and is placed on the body of the can as the pedal of the capping device is raised, the can and the can lid are connected and sealed.

The final pasteurizer after filling:

After filling & closing in glass and metal cans, the package is placed into the pasteurizer tunnel for final cooking and pasteurization. The Pasteur tunnel, specially designed for this purpose, includes 3 steps: washing hot water, lukewarm water, and cold water. As the packaging can pass through the pasteurizer tunnel, hot, lukewarm, and cold water is showered on the packaging in the required time until the last stage of pasteurization is done.

Labeling and boxing:

The information is already printed on the product in can packages but in glass packages the data is printed on the product after the final pasteurization. For this purpose, a label-shearing device is used. The label roll is placed on the edge of the glass and cut then heat is seen inside the element tunnel so that the corresponding nylon takes shape on the lid and part of the glass. After printing the information on the glass packaged product, the packages should be shrunk and prepared in cartons of the same size and number. In this case, a shrink-pack machine is used. The cans and bottles printed by the operator are placed on cartons or short-edge plastics in multiples (12 or 16 pieces) then they are pulled and guided by the front jack inside the sharing pack until they are placed inside the heat tunnel to be heated and formed by the elements of the device.

Setting up a tomato paste packaging line:

Tomato paste is one of the most widely used food seasonings worldwide. The increasing consumption of this food and its use in various foods in most countries has made tomato paste one of the most profitable markets for buying & selling food products. Because the essential ingredient of tomato paste is not available in all seasons of the year and it is not cultivated in most countries, the import of this product is a large amount of the annual essence in the food industry of most countries. Setting up a tomato paste packaging line can be important for many reasons.

Import and Packing:

As mentioned briefly, tomatoes are not cultivated in most countries and limited number of countries can produce tomato paste in acceptable quality. Therefore, importing food products such as tomato paste has a broad market. Setting up the packaging line is the best suggestion for those who cannot make tomato paste. This packing line can be purchased: tomato paste in aseptic packaging with a concentration of 36-38 Brix and imported to the destination country with a packaging line, tomato paste with personal packaging, and branded to the food market.

Conclusion:

For those who produce tomato paste and have access to tomatoes the best suggestion is to simultaneously set up a production and packaging line for tomato paste. By setting up a production and packaging line for tomato paste, the cost of packaging can be reduced and consumer packages of tomato paste can be presented to the market with a private brand. Setting up a tomato paste production line and its packaging line can be an excellent food product business.
